The Saudi Laparoscopic Society takes pride on launching this official journal. Since the birth of the society, regular general scientific meetings, monthly journal clubs, yearly symposia, outreach courses, and fellowship programs in surgery, opened the new vista for the progress of anesthesia in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and avenues of international contacts. It also opened the constructive contacts and collaborations with international bodies like in the same field to exchange the expertise and experience in modern laparoscopic surgery with special reference to weight loss surgery. Thus, many researches were generated in the academic departments of the universities and hospitals of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
The number of the native qualified surgeons in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is rising. The local training programs are ensuring high-quality postgraduate training and examinations. The cooperation between Saudi Arabia and North America made a regular flow of talented Saudi physicians to get higher professional training in esteemed training centers. Since this youth is returning to the homeland, it is very high time to lodge a scientific publication to address the local issues and develop surgical workforce and institute the quality care matching the international standards.
In the age of open access medical journalism and massive explosion in the field of science and information technology, various medical associations in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia are already publishing very successful medical journals and annals. Some of them have even celebrated their silver jubilee, and we hope that the "Saudi Journal of Laparoscopy" (SJL) will also play an important role to harness the contacts and links in the arena of surgery all over the world.
We are well aware of the fact that in these days of advanced technology, the publication of reputed journal which could survive needs lot of support services such as strong editorial board, peer review of quality manuscripts, financial assistance, and thus vast readership both at the national and international arena.
The editorial board of SJL knows the challenges and difficulties in starting and maintaining the quality journal and has been discussing the perspectives of peer review policy and strategies for nurturing the new authors to disseminate their research and knowledge and maintenance of quality and high standards of care in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Gulf and Middle East. The editorial board will try to solicit excellent articles that will pass rigorous review criteria. The editorial board will welcome all electronic communications, manuscripts, reviews, and resubmission by electronic mail through the internet.
We sincerely hope that this new journal will pass all the milestones of its infancy very successfully and be the beacon for the enthusiastic young generations of this specialty.
Finally, we are very grateful and feel extremely indebted to the national and international reviewers for their continuous mentoring, guidance, support, and encouragement for the development of a journal.
We are also grateful to the publication body "Medknow" and "Wolters Kluwer" for their professionalism in dealing with all aspects of this journal.
We are also aware of the fact that a big secretarial responsibility is being assigned to the secretarial board of this journal and thank them for their invaluable support.
